TV Review
Wonderfalls (Season 1)
FOX
2004
Rating:

And another one bites the dust. The best show to debut in 2004, "Wonderfalls" was cut down by hasty FOX executives after a mere four episodes. Similar to the more popular "Joan of Arcadia," the show follows the adventures of snarky, overeducated underachiever Jane Tyler (Caroline Dhavernas), who works in a Niagara Falls gift shop and is forced to commit acts of kindness (well, eventually they're acts of kindness) by the tourist trinkets that talk to her. Its high concept and sardonic humor attracted critics, but the real success of the show was in its investigation of how college graduates, their heads filled with at least four years' worth of apparently superfluous academia, sometimes have trouble dealing with the realities of modern life. Hilarious and unpredictable, "Wonderfalls" may have had a chance if FOX scheduled it after the "American Idol" juggernaut instead of letting it languish in the Friday night wasteland.
