TV Review
Deadwood (Season 1)
HBO
2004
Rating:

"Deadwood" belongs alongside "Unforgiven" for its thorough deconstruction of the Western and the myths surrounding the subjugation of the West that the genre incurred. Following a collection of morally conflicted anti-heroes and the greatest television villain in quite some time (the brilliant Ian McShane's Al Swearengen), "Deadwood" uses explicit violence, Shakespearean language and sexuality to show a real 1876 Dakota mining town completely devoid of law and ethics.
