TV Review
Arrested Development (Season 1/Mid-Season 2)
FOX
2004
Rating:

"Arrested Development" easily stands as the funniest show on television and one of the most surreal. Credit FOX for keeping this critically acclaimed but barely watched show on the air and for giving it a chance to thrive in the post-"Simpsons" slot on Sundays, but shame on the rest of the country for not watching it in the first place. Along with Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" line-up, this is the only show on television that contains the literal capacity to send people to the floor laughing in hysterics at the absurdities of this family in crisis. A lot of sitcoms throw jokes at the wall, but this is the rare show where every joke actually sticks, from David Cross' portrayal of Tobias Funke's latent homosexuality and desire to be a member of the Blue Man Group, to the lackluster magical talents of pompous egomaniac Gob (George Arnett) and his attempts to woo Liza Minelli. Though Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman) endures a lot from his family and, given a chance, he'll explain how much he loathes them, there's an undeniable love behind everything these characters do, no matter how bizarre it may be.
