The Whigs: Mission Control
Ato/Red
2008
Rating:

The Whigs is a band of blissful simplicity. The band's songs are three-chord monsters that know the pleasures of country-fried riffs (supplied by guitarist and vocalist Parker Gispert) and brontosaurus stomps (from drummer Julian Dorio). "Mission Control," The Whigs' second LP, is entirely without pretension, but also somewhat without a distinctive voice. The Athens, Ga., band often sounds indistinguishable from better Southern Rockers Drive-By Truckers (current touring mates) and Kings of Leon. As garage rockers, it's never quite The White Stripes or The Strokes. The promise of The Whigs is in the development of a sound that brings post-punk to the South. Opener "Like a Vibration" is the band's calling card because it brings pogoing to the barn dance. "Mission Dance" isn't quite the album promised from the hype of The Replacements and R.E.M. comparisons, but it is the effort of a band that's great at making unadorned, fun rock.
