Sia: Some People Have Real Problems

Almost four years after the release of “Colour the Small One,” Sia returns armed with the hype afforded her by the use of her “Breathe Me” on the devastating series finale of “Six Feet Under” and a crop of modest chanteuse torch songs that aim to make her this year’s Feist. “Some People Have Real Problems” is unlikely to build the critical and indie fan base of Feist’s “The Reminder,” however, as it too often favors mellow and down-tempo melodies that lack emotional conviction or pop idiosyncrasy.

Sia’s potential to extend her popularity beyond the Starbucks coffee stores where her album is being sold is only met in the one-two-three punch of a trio songs at the album’s center: the upbeat grief of “The Girl You Lost to Cocaine,” the tongue-tying duet with Beck “Academia” and the elegant beauty of her cover of The Kinks’ “I Go to Sleep.” “Some People” is otherwise Feist-light, so light, in fact, it drifts into the ether.
