Missy Elliot: Ching-A-Ling (Single)
From “Step Up 2: The Streets” and Missy Elliot’s forthcoming album
Atlantic/Wea
2008
Rating:

Missy Elliot’s “Ching-A-Ling” is a rework hack job that only functions because of the highly esteemed songs this single plunders. “Ching-A-Ling” opens with the “Bomb Intro” of “Pass That Dutch” and proceeds to crib that song’s Timbaland beat while Missy waxes flossy – “Ching, ching, gettin’ paid over here!” – rather than deploying her patented absurdism. “Pockets mo’ bigger than a stripper’s booty cheeks” approaches past glories, but elsewhere Missy lazily quotes Outkast’s “So Fresh, So Clean,” T.I.’s “Big Shit Poppin’” and Ludacris’ “Money Maker” and reworks the famous Beastie Boys line, “I’ve got more hits than Rod Carew” to far less effect (“I got more hits than you can get out of a bat”). Producer Swizz Beatz, besides aping Timbaland, borrows from himself, using the siren horns from DMX’s “Party Up (Up in Here)”and shaking his “Tambourine” and getting himself a whistlin’ with the flutes from David Holmes’ “Ocean’s Eleven” score. “Ching-A-Ling” has its club charms, but as a Missy effort, it’s a disappointment.
